Abstract

Antibiotic resistance is the ability of a bacterial strain to survive exposure to a specific antibiotic. This study was carried out to determine antibiotic resistant of Escherichia coli isolated from poultry workers. 4 samples of water used in washing hands were collected from 4 different persons working in poultry farm in Aba and were analyzed using microbiological standard. The E. coli was isolated and identified using morphological characteristics, gram staining and biochemical test. The result revealed that all the samples were contaminated with Escherichia coli. The result of the antibiotic test shows that ciprofloxacin, livofloxacin, and pefloxacin were sensitive to the identified bacteria while amoxicillin and ampicillin were resistant to the tested bacteria. Therefore poultry workers should wear proper protective materials to minimize being infected by infectious disease like E coli.
