STUDIES ON THE TAXONOMY AND NUTRITIONAL VALUE OF SOME FRUITS TREES IN MAIDUGURI BORNO STATE NIGERIA
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study investigates the taxonomy and nutritional values of selected fruit trees in Maiduguri, Borno State, Nigeria, focusing on apples, pineapples, and bananas. It highlights their roles in local diets, the economy, and ecological balance. The research addresses gaps in knowledge about the taxonomic classification and nutritional composition of these fruits, emphasizing their importance in combating malnutrition and food insecurity in semi-arid regions. Analytical methods were employed to assess the proximate and mineral compositions, revealing that bananas are energy-rich with high protein and carbohydrate content, apples are rich in fiber and calcium, and pineapples contain significant ash and magnesium levels. The findings demonstrate the nutritional complementarity of these fruits and their potential to improve public health and food security. Recommendations include promoting fruit consumption, supporting sustainable agriculture, and conducting further studies on nutrient bioavailability. This research contributes to biodiversity conservation, dietary enhancement, and the sustainable management of fruit tree resources in the region.
