ISLAMIC SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM OF DRUG ABUSE AMONG THE YOUTHS OF GWAGWALADA AREA COUNCIL
Abstract
Drug abuse among youths in Gwagwalada Area Council, Nigeria, poses a
significant social and public health challenge, necessitating culturally relevant
interventions. This study explores Islamic solutions to address this issue, focusing
on the role of Quranic teachings, mosque-based programs, and religious counseling
in preventing substance abuse. Employing a mixed-methods approach, data were
collected from 360 participants, including 260 Muslim youths, 80 non-Muslim
youths, 15 Islamic scholars, and 35 parents, using stratified random and purposive
sampling. Structured questionnaires assessed prevalence, risk factors, and attitudes
toward Islamic interventions among youths, while semi-structured interviews and
focus group discussions with scholars and parents explored the feasibility of faith-
based solutions. Anticipated findings suggest a 70% prevalence of substance use,
driven by peer pressure, socioeconomic challenges, and limited religious education
(Umarudeen et al. 7). Islamic principles, such as the prohibition of intoxicants
(Quran 5:90), and community engagement are expected to be effective in reducing
drug abuse, though stigma remains a barrier (Barriers and Facilitators 12). The
study recommends mosque-led educational programs, training for religious leaders,
and community campaigns to promote mental health and resilience among
Gwagwalada’s youths. These findings contribute to public health strategies by
highlighting the potential of Islamic interventions in Muslim-majority communities,
offering a model for addressing social vices in Nigeria.
