CONTRIBUTIONS OF QUANTITY SURVEYORS IN ACHIEVING GREEN BUILDING CERTIFICATION IN ABUJA
Abstract
ABSTRACT
The construction industry contributes significantly to environmental challenges, making
green building certification an essential tool for promoting sustainable practices. In Nigeria,
adoption of certification systems such as EDGE and LEED remains limited. Quantity
Surveyors (QSs), as cost management professionals, are well-positioned to support green
projects through cost planning, life cycle costing, and sustainable procurement. The study
assessed the contributions of Quantity Surveyors in achieving green building certification in
Abuja, Nigeria, with emphasis on their awareness, contributions, challenges, and strategies
for improvement. A quantitative design was adopted using structured questionnaires
distributed electronically to QSs in Abuja. From a target sample of 66, a total of 63 responses
were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Findings show moderate awareness of green
building concepts but low direct involvement in certification. QSs contribute in areas such as
life cycle costing and material cost planning, though limited by inadequate training, weak
institutional support, and late project involvement. The study recommends capacity building,
curriculum review, stronger policy backing, and client sensitization. It contributes to
knowledge by highlighting strategies for strengthening QS integration into green-certified
project delivery in Abuja, and Nigeria at large
