Abstract

ABSTRACT The design and implementation of a 500watts capacity solar cooker is presented in this project work. It simply demonstrates the energy conversion process from light (sunlight) to electrical and finally to heat used for cooking and other purposes or applications. It incorporates solar panels to harness the sun’s ultraviolet light and convert to electricity through photovoltaic principles. The heating coil resistor is then utilized, as the final transducer, to convert the electrical energy from the output of the photovoltaic to heat. The design process was carefully carried out to ensure a specified heating-coil resistance value that would yield the desired 500watts from the rated photovoltaic system output. The battery backup device is used to store the excess electricity, during the day time, for later use. The battery charging process is controlled by the charge controller of the control unit to avoid overcharging and over discharging which affects the battery life.
