Abstract

ABSTRACСТ This study investigates the effect of media ethics in the process of news gathering and dissemination amongjournalists in Delta State, using the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) as a case study. The research examines how adherence or disregard for journalistic ethical principles such as objectivity, truthfulness, accuracy, fairness, and accountability impacts the credibility ofnews reports and public trust in the media. Utilizing a descriptive survey design, data were collected through structured questionnaires distributed among registered members of NUJ in Delta State. The findings reveal that while a significant number of journalists are aware of ethical guidelines, various factors such as political interference, economic pressures, lack of editorial independence, and inadequate training often lead to ethical breaches. The study concludes that strict adherence to media ethics is crucial for maintaining public trust and ensuring professional standards in journalism. Recommendations were made for continuous ethical training and the reinforcement of internal regulatory frameworks to promote responsible journalism
