A SEMANTIC ANALYSIS OF THE LANGUAGE OF WHATSAPP CHAT OF 100LEVEL STUDENT IN FUDMA
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study examined the semantic features of language used in WhatsApp chats among 100-level students of Federal University Dutsin-Ma. The research investigated how meanings are created, interpreted, and communicated through the use of abbreviations, acronyms, emojis, code-switching, slang expressions, and other linguistic innovations commonly found in WhatsApp conversations. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, chat samples from selected students were analyzed to identify the semantic patterns and meaning-making strategies employed in their digital interactions. The findings revealed that WhatsApp communication among 100-level students is characterized by creativity, brevity, and context-dependent meanings, with users relying heavily on shared knowledge and social context to achieve effective communication. The study further demonstrated that digital communication has significantly influenced language use among the students, leading to the emergence of new semantic forms and expressions that facilitate quick and efficient interaction. The research concluded that WhatsApp serves as an important platform for linguistic innovation and meaning negotiation among university students, thereby contributing to the ongoing evolution of contemporary language use in digital environments.
