MICROBIAL ASSESSMENT AND ANTIBIOGRAM PROFILE OF MICRORGANISMS ISOLATED FROM AIR IN ENVIRONMENTAL LABORATORY IN FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC OFFA
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Laboratories are rooms equipped for performing scientific researches. Monitoring of bio-aerosols in laboratories will help to estimate the health hazards posed by airborne microorganisms and create standards for air quality control. This study was aimed at assessing the airborne microorganisms present in the indoor environment of Environmental Biology Laboratory in FederalPolytechnic, Offa, Kwara State, Nigeria.Air samples were collected from Environmental Biology Laboratory of Federal Polytechnic Offa using settling plate techniques and the plates were incubated. The organisms were identified using standard conventional methods which include macroscopic, microscopic and biochemical characterization. The total aerobic plate count ranged from 2.1 X101 to 7.9 X 101 Cfu/ml while the total fungal count ranged from 0.5 X101 to 3.2 X 101 Sfu/ml. The bacterial species identified include Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The fungal species identified include Aspergillus sp, Rhizopus sp, and Penicillium sp.The level of microbial contamination observed in this laboratory calls for adequate sanitary measures to be put in place to control airborne bio-aerosols to safeguard the health of the users.
