Abstract

ABSTRACT The study revealed that modern economic pressures, such as inflation, rural-urban migration, and limited local employment opportunities, have compelled women in Itoko to diversify their sources of income. Many now merge traditional trading practices with more contemporary strategies, including the use of digital platforms, mobile payment systems, and engagement in informal cross-town commerce. It was also found that numerous women operate small-scale enterprises from their homes, producing items such as herbal cosmetics, palm oil, local textiles, and baked goods, which are distributed within and beyond Itoko. A surprising discovery was the multifunctional role of the Itoko markets not only as spaces of economic exchange but also as venues for communal gatherings, women’s savings groups (ajo), local arbitration, and informal grassroots political engagement. Older women largely operated within local and regional market routes, but younger women are increasingly redefining economic participation by embracing formal education, owning mobile bank accounts, accessing micro-credit schemes, and leveraging social media for business visibility. This study concludes that despite historical marginalization and structural challenges, the women of Itoko have persistently adapted to economic transitions, maintaining a strong and evolving presence in the town’s economy and community life.
