INVESTIGATION OF INORGANIC PRODUCE AND HAZARDS FOR PUBLIC AWARENESS IN AGRICULTURAL EDUCATION IN MAKURDI AREA OF BENUE STATE
Abstract
This chapter presents a comprehensive summary of the findings regarding the hazards associated with inorganic produce and the effectiveness of public awareness strategies in agricultural education within the Makurdi Local Government Area of Benue State. The population consists of 7150 agricultural students with the sample size of 378 Agricultural Education students. The study used mean, standard deviation and t-test to analyze the collected data. From the analysis, the study highlighted that common inorganic produce includes various fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides which, while crucial for enhancing crop productivity, pose significant health and environmental risks. The respondents acknowledged the hazards stemming from the excessive use of these substances, causing contamination of water sources, soil degradation, and a host of health issues, particularly respiratory complications and chronic diseases among vulnerable populations such as students in agricultural education. The analysis of public awareness levels revealed that while some awareness initiatives are in place, there remains a substantial gap in understanding the long-term health impacts of chemical exposure and the safe application of inorganic inputs. Strategies for heightening awareness, such as agricultural education programs, community workshops, and the utilization of social media, were recognized as essential tools to foster community engagement and inform residents about sustainable agricultural practices. Additionally, the hypothesis testing established a significant relationship between the hazards caused by inorganic produce and the level of public awareness, underscoring the necessity of targeted educational interventions. From the findings of this study, it is evident that the use of inorganic produce within the Makurdi Local Government Area yields both benefits and risks. While these chemical inputs are integral to enhancing agricultural productivity and meeting food demands, their detrimental impact on public health and the environment cannot be overlooked. The levels of public awareness regarding the hazards associated with inorganic inputs are currently inadequate, thereby necessitating a concerted effort to enhance educational initiatives. As the agricultural landscape continues to evolve, addressing these hazards through well-structured public awareness campaigns and educational programs is paramount. Based on the findings and conclusions drawn from this study, the following recommendations are proposed, Implement comprehensive agricultural education programs targeted at farmers and students in the Makurdi area to educate them about the hazards of inorganic produce and the benefits of sustainable practices, Organize regular community workshops and seminars that bring together farmers, extension agents, and consumers to discuss safe practices, the impact of chemical inputs, and alternative sustainable agricultural methods.
