Abstract

The present study was aimed to isolate and identify the Plants Parasitic nematodes in temporary Biological Garden of Sokoto State University, Sokoto, the soil sample was collected from five sections of the garden, then transported to the laboratory for the isolation and identification of soil nematodes using standard Sieve Plate method, the data was analysed using descriptive statistics. The total abundance of the nematode in the study was 323 within 13 genera. Rotylenchus species had the highest percentage [43 (13.3%)] followed by Paratylenchus species [43 (13.0%)] then Xiphinema species [39 (12.1%)], Anguina species [36 (11.2%)], Meloidogyne species [31 (9.6%)], Dolichodorus species [25 (7.7%)], Paratylenchus species [21 (6.5%)], Longidorus species [20 (6.2%)], Aphelenchoides species [18 (5.6%)], Radopholus species [15 (4.6%)], Criconema species [13 (4.0%)], Trichodorus species [11 (3.4%)] and Ditelynchus species 09 (2.8%) had least percentage. Ecto plant parasitic nematodes had the highest frequency (67.0%), followed by migratory nematodes (25.0%) while then endo (4.6%). Section B had the highest percentage (28.2%), followed by A (27.6%), D (24.5%), E (12.7%) then C (7.1%). There should be awareness on the effect of nematodes damage to the crops among the farmers in Sokoto State university and world at large.
