Abstract

This study examines the state of gender equality in the workplace, with a focus on identifying key factors contributing to gender disparities and assessing the effectiveness of existing policies in promoting equality. Using a questionnaire distributed to 100 respondents across five organizations in Sokoto State Sokoto State University, MTN Nigeria Sokoto, UDUTH, Sokoto State Civil Service, and BUA Cement Sokoto the research gathered data on various aspects of workplace gender dynamics. The results revealed that while progress has been made in promoting gender equality, significant challenges remain, particularly in terms of the gender pay gap, underrepresentation of women in leadership positions, and biases in hiring and promotion practices. Key findings indicate that cultural norms, gender stereotypes, and a lack of leadership support contribute to the persistence of these issues. Additionally, although policies aimed at promoting gender equality exist in many organizations, their implementation is often inconsistent or ineffective. The study concludes that more targeted strategies, such as fairer recruitment practices, stronger anti-discrimination measures, and better support for work-life balance, are needed to foster a more equitable workplace environment. This research provides valuable insights into the barriers to achieving gender equality and offers recommendations to improve workplace practices, ensuring that both men and women have equal opportunities for career advancement and fair treatment in their respective organizations.
