Abstract

This research investigates the adoption and effectiveness of strategic planning among Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) in Bauchi Metropolis, Nigeria. The study aims to identify key factors influencing the adoption of strategic planning, its contribution to business performance, and the effectiveness of such planning in enhancing the overall operations of SMEs. A total of 160 questionnaires were distributed, with 152 responses collected and analyzed using descriptive statistics. Key findings indicate that intense market competition, technological advancements, access to funding, and risk management are significant drivers for SMEs to adopt strategic planning. Additionally, leadership involvement, continuous monitoring, and alignment of organizational culture with strategic goals were identified as critical factors contributing to the effectiveness of strategic planning in improving performance. However, the study also reveals diverse opinions on the impact of strategic planning on resource allocation, employee morale, and cultural alignment. The research concludes that while strategic planning is generally recognized as beneficial, its successful implementation requires a tailored approach that takes into account the unique dynamics of SMEs. The study provides recommendations for capacity building, leadership development, continuous improvement, and further research to enhance the effectiveness of strategic planning in SMEs. Keywords: Strategic planning, SMEs, business performance, resource allocation, organizational culture.
