Abstract

The study examined the relationship between demographic factors and lifestyle of the people of Kaduna State. The lifestyle factors of smoking, alcohol consumption, sedentary lifestyle, nutritional habit, drug habit and sexual behavior constitutes the dependent variables. The aim of the study is to assess the health related problems associated with lifestyle factors practiced by Kaduna people. While the demographic characteristics of age, gender, location and socio-economic status constitutes the independent variables. Stratified and cluster random sampling techniques were used to select samples for the study. The population for study was 6,066,526 and the sampling size was 1350 purposively selected for the study. The data collected were analyzed using statistical package for social science (SPSS V20) for chi-squire statistical analysis to test the stated null hypothesis at 0.05 level of significance. Calculatedx^2 value of 141.51 was greater than the critical value of 23.68 at 0.05 alpha level of significance therefore the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected and we concluded that Health problems suffered by the people of Kaduna State are significantly related to their lifestyles. Socio-economic status is significantly related to alcoholic lifestyle, nutritional habits, drug habits and sexual behavior of the respondents. Based on the findings, it was recommended that health education of children and youths (especially adolescents) should be intensified in the primary and secondary schools in order to make them appreciate the adverse effects of alcohol, drug abuse, smoking inactivity and indiscriminate sexual behavior.
