PRODUCTION OF STARCH FROM CASSAVA (MANIHOT ESCULENTA) AND IT CROSS-LINKED DERIVATIVES
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This project explores the production of starch from cassava (Manihot esculenta), a major staple crop in tropical regions, and the subsequent modification to create cross-linked derivatives. Cassava starch extraction involves processes such as cleaning, grating, separation, and drying, yielding a versatile product used in food, pharmaceuticals, and industrial applications. Cross-linking enhances starch properties like viscosity, stability, and resistance to shear, making it suitable for advanced uses. The study draws on established methods and characterizations from literature, highlighting yields around 18-20% for starch extraction and improved functionalities in derivatives. This study underscores cassava's potential as a sustainable source for modified starches. This work also recommended to find out the use of cross-linked starch as a floculant in the removal of heavy metal from waste water before they are discharged to the environment.
The sample for the research was purchased from kalgo market, local government in kebbi state Nigeria then the whole procedure for production was carried out in chemistry lab, faculty of science Federal University Birnin Kebbi.
