Abstract

The kidneys are vital for maintaining homeostasis by filtering blood, removing waste, and regulating electrolytes, including sodium, potassium, phosphate, calcium, chloride, and bicarbonate. These electrolytes are crucial for fluid balance, nerve transmission, and muscle contraction. Imbalances can lead to serious health issues. Kolaq Alagbo Bitters, a widely used herbal remedy in Nigeria, is touted for benefits such as improved digestion and enhanced well-being, yet its impact on renal function and electrolyte balance is not well-documented. This study aims to evaluate the effects of Kolaq Alagbo Bitters on serum electrolyte levels in Albino Wistar rats. Conducted at Lead City University, Nigeria, this study utilized thirty male Albino Wistar rats, divided into control and treatment groups. Treatment groups received varying doses of Kolaq Alagbo Bitters, while the control group received standard feed and water. Serum electrolyte levels (sodium, potassium, chloride, bicarbonate, calcium, and phosphate) were analyzed using Ion Selective Electrode (ISE) and Chemiluminescence methodology. Analysis revealed no significant changes in sodium, chloride, or bicarbonate levels across all groups. Potassium levels showed a significant increase with higher doses of Kolaq Alagbo Bitters. Calcium levels demonstrated a complex dose-response relationship: normal doses increased calcium, while overdose decreased it. Phosphate levels remained stable across all conditions. Kolaq Alagbo Bitters selectively affects electrolyte balance in Albino Wistar rats, notably altering calcium levels with a dose-dependent effect and minimally impacting other electrolytes. These findings suggest potential benefits and risks of Kolaq Alagbo Bitters, underscoring the need for further research to fully understand its implications for electrolyte balance and overall health.
