Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study examined the role of parents as caregivers in the upbringing of children among junior secondary school students in Wamakko Local Government, Sokoto State. The research was guided by the recognition that parental involvement is a crucial determinant of children’s academic, social, and emotional development. Using a descriptive survey design, data were collected from selected parents, teachers, and students to explore the extent of parental care, supervision, and support in children’s education and overall well-being. The findings revealed that parents play a significant role in shaping children’s behavior, moral values, and learning outcomes through guidance, provision of educational materials, and active participation in school-related activities. However, challenges such as economic hardship, low literacy levels, and limited awareness of effective parenting practices were identified as constraints to optimal parental involvement. The study concludes that strengthening parental roles in caregiving is vital for improving the holistic development of junior secondary school children in Wamakko. It recommends the need for parental education programs, community sensitization, and government support to enhance effective child upbringing.
