DELINEATION OF AQUIFER POTENTIAL USING ELECTRICAL RESISTIVITY METHOD AT PAIKO SECRETARIAT, NIGER.
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study investigates groundwater potential at Paiko Secretariat, Niger State, using the electrical resistivity method. Fifteen Vertical Electrical Sounding (VES) stations were established along three profiles (G, H, and I) with the Schlumberger array to determine subsurface resistivity and aquifer characteristics. The results reveal four main layers: topsoil, weathered layer, fractured/weathered basement (main aquifer), and fresh basement rock. The aquifer zones occur between 15–35 m depth within the weathered and fractured basement, which show moderate-to-high resistivity values indicating good groundwater potential. Borehole drilling is recommended around VES 3–4 (Profile G), VES 2 and 5 (Profile H), and VES 4 and 6 (Profile I). The study confirms that electrical resistivity is a reliable and cost-effective method for delineating aquifer zones in basement complex terrains.
