ISOLATION AND IDENTIFICATION OF MICROORGANISMS ASSOCIATED WITH URINE SAMPLES COLLECTED FROM STUDENTS OF OSUN STATE POLYTECHNIC, IREE.
Abstract
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) represent a major global public health issue, with millions of cases annually, leading to significant morbidity and healthcare costs. This study aims to isolate and identify uropathogenic microorganisms from urine samples collected from students at Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, and to assess their antimicrobial susceptibility patterns. The results indicated the presence of various uropathogens, primarily gram-positive cocci such as Streptococcus spp., Staphylococcus spp., and Enterococcus spp., as well as fungal species like Saccharomyces spp. and Penicillium spp.. The study highlights the importance of proper hygiene and early diagnosis, as well as the rising challenge of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) among these pathogens. Key findings underscore the need for improved public health measures, including better hygiene practices and more regular medical screenings to manage UTIs effectively among students.
