Abstract

The study investigated the improvisation of instructional materials among senior secondary school teachers in Dala Local Government Area of Kano State. Instructional materials are essential tools that facilitate effective teaching and learning; however, inadequate provision of these materials in schools often necessitates improvisation by teachers. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population comprised senior secondary school teachers in selected schools within Dala Local Government Area. A sample of 120 teachers was selected using simple random sampling techniques. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed using frequencies, percentages, and mean scores. The findings revealed that many teachers improvise instructional materials due to shortages of standard teaching resources. The study further revealed that improvisation enhances students’ understanding, promotes active learning, and improves academic performance. However, lack of funds, inadequate training, and limited time were identified as major constraints to effective improvisation. The study concluded that improvisation of instructional materials is a valuable strategy for improving teaching and learning in secondary schools. Recommendations include provision of adequate funding, teacher training, and encouragement of innovative teaching practices.
