IMPACT OF "THE JOHNSONS" SOAP OPERA ON GENDER ROLES AND RELATIONSHIPS IN NIGERIA (A CASE STUDY OF HNG 2 MASS COMMUNICATION STUDENTS, THE POLYTECHNIC, IBADAN)
Abstract
This research explores the impact of the popular Nigerian soap opera, The Johnsons, on
gender roles and relationships among HND 2 Mass Communication students at The
Polytechnic, Ibadan. The study investigates how the portrayal of gender dynamics and family
relationships in the soap opera influences the audience's perception of traditional gender
roles and their relationships in contemporary Nigerian society. Using a mixed-method
approach, data were gathered through a structured questionnaire administered to 150
respondents from the target group. The findings reveal a significant relationship between
media representation in The Johnsons and the perception of gender roles and relationships
among the respondents. This suggests that media content, particularly family-oriented soap
operas, plays a crucial role in shaping societal norms and individual attitudes towards
gender. The study concludes with recommendations for media producers to promote more
balanced gender representation in television content, as well as implications for further
research into media influences on social behavior.
