QUALITATIVE ASSESSMENT OF PHYTOCHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF ETHANOL GROUND NUT (ARACHIS HYPOGAEA) AND BAMBARANUT (VIGNA SUBTERRANEA) SEEDS
Abstract
Ground nut (Arachishypogaea) and bambaranut (Vigna subterranean) is one of the major legumes that is grown around the world. It is a huge source of income for households and national economies in Africa because of trade and exports. Globally, groundnut is a source of oil, food and feed for livestock through its by-products such as groundnut cake. This research project examined qualitative assessment of phytochemical composition of ethanol ground nut (Arachishypogaea) and bambaranut (Vigna subterranean) seeds. The quantitative and qualitative phytochemical screening was carried out according to the method described by Trease and Evans (1985) and Harborne (1998), respectively. The present study reveals preliminary phytochemical analysis of the ethanol ground nut and bambara nut seeds, which tested positive for flavonoids, tannins, saponins, terpenoids, cardiac glycosides and alkaloids except steroids for both ground nut and bambara nut seeds. These phytochemicals are secondary metabolites isolated from plants that have been shown to provide health benefits for humans, such as the prevention or treatment of diseases. The crude leaf extract from marjoram showed high concentrations of flavonoids and alkaloids in ground nut and bambara nut seeds which can be used as antibiotic for several diseases. Also, the richness in other phytonutrient in this plant can be correlated with its antibacterial property and could be a good source of natural antioxidant.
