Abstract

ABSTRACT In Nigeria, the human papillomavirus (HPV) continues to be a major public health concern for a number of reasons. One significant problem is that Nigerians, especially those living in rural regions, have little awareness about HPV and the vaccine. The connection between the virus and cervical cancer is not well known, and there are common misconceptions regarding the efficiency and safety of the vaccine. This study employed a descriptive cross-sectional design to assess the knowledge, attitude and willingness to uptake of human papilloma virus vaccine among students of Anglican Grammar School Ogbomosho Oyo State. Multistage sampling technique was used to recruit 315 respondents. Questionnaire with 0.77 reliability was used as the instrument of data collection. The responses were analyzed with descriptive statistics (frequency and tables) and influential statistics of chi-square to test the hypothesis. The findings showed that majority of the respondents 193(61.5%) have heard of HPV, while 88(27.9%) have not. more than half of the respondents 189(60.3%) think getting vaccinated against human papilloma virus is important, 74(23.4%) said no, while 52(16.3%) don’t know. more than half of the respondents 165(52.6%) are willing to receive HPV vaccine, 15(39.7%) are not, while 25(7.7%) said they don’t know if they are willing. Three hypotheses were set and tested using chi square at 0.05 level of significance. No significant association was found between socio demographic factors and vaccine willingness (P=0.085, Cal=8.211a). However, significant associations were found between knowledge (P=0.000, Cal=36.3130) and attitude (P=0.000, Cal=101.744) towards HPV and its vaccine and willingness to receive the vaccine. at 0.05 level of significance iv In conclusion the findings revealed that majority of the respondent have high level of knowledge and are willing to receive human papilloma virus vaccine Keywords: knowledge, attitude, willingness, human papilloma virus vaccine Word counts: 287 words
