FAMILY PLANNING IN ISLAM AND WAY FORWARD FROM AN ISLAMIC PERSPECTIVE (A CASE STUDY OF SOKOTO NORTH LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, SOKOTO)
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This research investigates the Islamic perspective on family planning and the way forward, with a particular focus on Sokoto North Local Government Area. The study examines Qur’anic verses, Hadith traditions, and the opinions of Islamic scholars regarding family planning. It also explores cultural attitudes, challenges, and misconceptions surrounding family planning practices in the study area. The methodology employed includes survey design, with data collected through questionnaires and interviews from selected respondents in Sokoto North. The study finds that while Islam permits temporary family planning methods for valid reasons such as health and welfare, misconceptions and cultural barriers hinder acceptance in the area.
The research concludes that greater awareness through religious leaders, health workers, and community-based initiatives is required. The study recommends that government and NGOs collaborate with Islamic scholars to provide accurate, Shari‘ah-compliant information on family planning for improved maternal and child health outcomes.
