ANALYSIS OF CHALLENGES AND PROSPECTS OF TEACHING BASIC ELECTRONICS IN GOVERNMENT TECHNICAL COLLEGES IN KEBBI STATE
Abstract
This study analyzed the challenges and prospects of teaching Basic Electronics in Government Technical Colleges in Kebbi State. The objectives were to identify major constraints affecting instructional delivery and to examine opportunities for improving teaching and learning outcomes. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The population comprised 22 teachers of Basic Electronics drawn from four Government Technical Colleges in Kebbi State. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire titled 'Questionnaire on the Challenges and Prospects of Teaching Basic Electronics in Government Technical Colleges (QCPTBETC)'. The instrument was validated by experts in technical education and measurement, while its reliability, determined using the Cronbach Alpha method, yielded a coefficient of 0.82, indicating high internal consistency. Data collected were analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation. Findings revealed that key challenges include inadequate functional laboratory equipment, poor funding, outdated curriculum, insufficient teacher training, and low motivation among instructors. Despite these challenges, respondents identified several prospects such as curriculum reform, ICT integration, teacher retraining, and public-private partnerships as potential solutions. The study concluded that addressing these challenges through adequate funding, provision of modern facilities, and regular professional development would significantly enhance the quality and effectiveness of Basic Electronics education in Kebbi State.
