FOLDER LOCKER ENCRYPTION SYSTEM AND FILE SOFTWARE
Abstract
The rapid growth of digital information has made data security a critical priority for individuals and organizations. Unauthorized physical access to sensitive files remains a significant threat in shared computing environments, where standard operating system protections are often insufficient or too complex for the average user. This project, titled "Design and Implementation of a Folder Locking System," aims to address these security challenges by developing a robust application for securing personal directories. The primary objective was to design a user-friendly software utility that restricts access to specific folders using a custom authentication mechanism. The application was developed using the Rapid Application Development (RAD) methodology to ensure iterative testing and reliability. Visual Basic.NET (VB.NET) was selected as the implementation language due to its seamless integration with the Windows Operating System and its efficiency in manipulating filesystem attributes. The system employs a specific directory locking algorithm utilizing Class Identifier (CLSID) renaming techniques, which converts standard folders into locked system objects, effectively hiding them from unauthorized view. Implementation results demonstrate that the application successfully secures folders against standard Explorer navigation, requiring a valid alphanumeric passkey for access. The study concludes that the developed software offers a cost-effective, lightweight, and reliable solution for enhancing local data privacy. It is recommended for use in personal and small office environments to mitigate the risk of data theft and privacy breaches.
