Abstract

Microbial examination of spoilt Avocado fruits was carried out to obtain the causal organism. A total of 5 avocado fruit were purchased from railway market and were examined by culturing on nutrient agar for bacteria causing post – harvest spoilage on the fruits; four (4) bacterial isolates were identified, namely Staphylococcus aureus, E. coli, Salmonella and Shigella. The total viable bacterial counts of avocado samples across five different locations ranged from 4.0 x 107 to 2.5 x107 CFU/ML. The sample D gotten from Railway market had the highest bacteria load of 4.0 x 107 CFU/ML while the sample B gotten from North-bank market had the least Bacteria load of 2.5 x107 CFU/ML. The overall bacteriological assessment of spoiled avocado fruit samples studied indicated a significant count and contamination with bacterial pathogens.
