IMPACT OF STUDENTS' INDUSTRIAL WORK EXPERIENCE SCHEME (SIWES) ON SCIENCE EDUCATION STUDENTS FOR IMPROVING PRACTICAL SKILLS
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study examined the impact of the Students' Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) on Science Education students in improving practical skills. The objectives were to determine the relationship between SIWES and practical skill acquisition, identify challenges affecting SIWES implementation and examine its effectiveness in enhancing students' employability.
A survey research design was adopted. Two hundred respondents were selected using convenience sampling. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and analysed using simple percentages and Pearson Product Moment Correlation.
The findings revealed that SIWES significantly enhances students' practical skills and employability after graduation despite challenges such as inadequate placement opportunities and insufficient industrial facilities. The study concluded that SIWES remains an essential component of science education and recommended increased government funding, improved supervision and stronger collaboration between tertiary institutions and industries.
