SOCIO ECONOMIC EFFECT OF POPULATION GROWTH IN SOKOTO METROPOLIS SOKOTO STATE
Abstract
Abstract
This study investigates the socio-economic effects of population growth in Sokoto Metropolis, Sokoto State. Rapid population growth has significantly influenced urban development, creating both opportunities and challenges for economic and social progress. The research examines the impact of increasing population on employment opportunities, housing, healthcare delivery, educational facilities, transportation, environmental sanitation, and public infrastructure. A descriptive survey research design is adopted, with data collected through questionnaires and interviews administered to residents of the metropolis. The collected data are analyzed using descriptive statistics, including frequencies, percentages, and tables. Findings are expected to reveal that while population growth contributes to market expansion and labour availability, it also increases pressure on public services, unemployment, housing shortages, traffic congestion, and environmental degradation. The study concludes that effective urban planning, investment in infrastructure, employment generation, and population management policies are essential for achieving sustainable socio-economic development in Sokoto Metropolis. Recommendations are provided to assist policymakers, urban planners, and government agencies in addressing the challenges associated with rapid population growth.
