PHYSICS ABILITY AS PREDICTOR ACADEMIC PERFORMACE IN MATHEMATICS AMONG SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN KUMBOTSO L.G.A
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study investigates the role of physics ability as a predictor of academic performance in mathematics among senior secondary school students in Kumbotso Local Government Area (L.G.A.), Kano State. Recognizing the strong conceptual link between physics and mathematics, the research seeks to determine whether proficiency in physics significantly influences students' success in mathematics. A descriptive-explanatory and cross-sectional survey design was adopted, utilizing stratified random sampling to select 75 SS2 science students from Government Senior Secondary School (GSS) Panshekara. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson product-moment correlation, and linear regression techniques. The findings revealed a significant positive relationship between students' physics ability and their academic performance in mathematics. This suggests that strong skills in physics can serve as a reliable predictor of mathematical achievement among senior secondary school students. Based on the results, recommendations were made for educators and curriculum planners to integrate more interdisciplinary teaching approaches that strengthen students' abilities across both subjects, ultimately enhancing overall academic performance in science education.
