A PROPOSED LOGISTICS HEADQUARTERS FOR DHL LOGISTICS AT MOWE-IBAFO, OGUN STATE.
Abstract
ABSTRACT
The logistics industry plays a critical role in the global economy by facilitating the movement, storage, and distribution of goods, services, and information from raw material sources to final consumers. Its efficiency directly influences national productivity, international competitiveness, and customer satisfaction. With the rapid expansion of globalization, industrialization, and e-commerce, logistics organizations face increasing pressure to deliver faster services, improve transparency, and maintain efficient operational coordination.Despite the growing importance of logistics operations, many organizations continue to experience infrastructural and operational challenges such as inadequate office and storage spaces, insufficient parking facilities for various vehicle types, poor vehicular circulation, fragmented departmental integration, inefficient work-flows, and limited loading and offloading capacity. These shortcomings often result in operational delays, increased costs, reduced employee productivity, and lower customer satisfaction. This study aims to propose the design and functional framework of a purpose-built logistics headquarters that integrates administrative, operational, and storage functions into a centralized and technologically enabled facility capable of improving coordination, efficiency, and operational performance. The research adopted a qualitative approach using literature reviews, online case studies, and the collection of primary and secondary data to identify the operational requirements and infrastructural challenges commonly faced by logistics organizations.Findings reveal that an integrated logistics headquarters that combines flexible office spaces, co-working areas, meeting and training rooms, staff lounges, optimized storage facilities, well-organized parking zones, and dedicated sending and receiving areas can significantly enhance work-flow efficiency and operational coordination. The inclusion of specialized loading bays, offloading zones, and vehicle maneuvering spaces further supports smooth, safe, and high-volume goods handling while minimizing congestion during peak operations. The proposed logistics headquarters serves as a strategic hub for key logistics functions such as supply chain planning, inventory management, transportation coordination, procurement, vendor management, and customer service. Within both global and Nigerian contexts, the development of such a facility can strengthen state-level supply chains, improve operational efficiency, support economic growth, and align logistics infrastructure with contemporary trends in resilient and sustainable logistics system
