A SURVEY OF COUNSELLING SERVICES, MOTIVATIONAL FACTORS AND CAREER CHOICE AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS WITH HEARING IMPAIRMENT IN CALABAR MUNICIPAL OF CROSS RIVER STATE
Abstract
The study investigated the counselling services, motivational factors and career choice among secondary school students with hearing impairment in Calabar Municipal of Cross River State. To achieve this, three hypotheses were formed to guide the study. Literature review was carried out on the variable of the study. Ex-post facto research design was adopted for the study. The design was considered appropriate because the nature and magnitude of relationship among the personal variables of student’s performance are being investigated. It is economical in measuring several variables and their relationship simultaneously. Also, the researcher has no control over the student’s characteristics since they have already occurred in the population. Samples of fifty (50) students were selected for the study. The selection was done through the purposive sampling technique; this was due to limited number of samples in the study area. Two research instruments were used for the data collection. The first was survey questionnaire and the second was. partly adopted occupational preference and subject combination questionnaire. Chi-square was the statistical analysis techniques deployed to test the hypothesis under study. They were adopted because of the nature of the variables involved in the study. The result 0.05 level of significance was used for testing each of the hypothesis. It was later revealed that school as a motivational factor significantly influence relationship with student’s career choice. Parent as a motivational factor significantly influence relationship with student’s career choice. And finally, the school as a motivational factor significantly influence relationship with student’s career choice. Based on the study and findings, recommendations and suggestions for further studies were made.
