Abstract

ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to extract oil from cashew nuts that were bought from the Owode market in the Offa local government area of Kwara state. The oil was then characterized in order to determine whether it was suitable for consumption and other uses. For the extraction, a Soxhlet apparatus with n-hexane as a solvent was utilized. The extracted oil was examined for its physicochemical characteristics. The appearance of the oil was golden yellow. The acid value was 2.8 mg KOH/g, the saponification value was 188 mg KOH/g, the percentage of oil extracted was 29.5%, and the free fatty acid (FFA) was 1.4%. When compared to the standard, the physicochemical analysis results demonstrate that cashew kernel oil is non-toxic.
