Abstract

ABSTRACT This study is aimed at comparing analysis of hand dug well and borehole water in osogbo metropolis. It also laid emphasis on laboratory test to determine the physicochemical. The samples were analyzed for the following physic-chemical parameters: Temperature, Odour, Taste, pH, Alkalinity, Acidity, Total Solid, Total Hardness, Chloride and Dissolved Oxygen. The results obtained shows the temperature of borehole water range between (27.6°C – 29.0°C) while hand dug well range between (26.3°C – 28.0°C). The pH value range between (6.56 – 5.89) in borehole water, (6.92 – 7.24) in hand dug well which are within the standard value by NSDWQ of 6.5 – 8.5. Alkalinity range between (360 – 420.6)mg/L in borehole water, (440.6 – 518)mg/L in hand dug well. Acidity range between (70.6 – 103.4)mg/L in borehole water, (50 – 81.4)mg/L in hand dug well. Total solid range between (4.0 – 5.0)mg/L in borehole water, (6.0 – 8.0)mg/L in hand dug well. Chloride range between (21.84 – 28.64)mg/L in borehole water, (30.80 – 35.20)mg/L in hand dug well. Total hardness range between (0.96 – 2.0)mg/L in borehole water, (0.83 – 1.40)mg/L in hand dug well. The Dissolved Oxygen concentration range between (24.8 – 30.8)mg/L in borehole water, (23.0 – 27.6)mg/L in hand dug well. Considering the results obtained from the investigation, these shows that water from hand dug well is harder than that from boreholes which can be soften by boiling.
