Abstract

Abstract This study examines gender disparities in labour assignment among inmates of Agodi Correctional Facilities, Ibadan, Oyo State. The research focuses on identifying differences in the allocation of labour activities between male and female inmates, the factors influencing such assignments, and the implications of gender-based work distribution on inmate rehabilitation and welfare. Correctional facilities are designed not only for punishment but also for rehabilitation through vocational training, skill development, and productive engagement; however, unequal access to labour opportunities may affect inmates’ experiences and reintegration prospects. The study adopts a descriptive research design, using questionnaires and interviews to gather data from inmates and relevant correctional personnel. The findings reveal that labour assignments within correctional facilities are influenced by factors such as gender roles, perceived physical ability, available vocational programmes, institutional policies, and societal expectations. Male inmates are often assigned more physically demanding tasks, while female inmates are more likely to engage in domestic and care-related activities. These patterns reflect broader gender stereotypes that shape occupational roles both within and outside correctional settings. The study concludes that gender-sensitive approaches should be incorporated into labour assignment policies in correctional facilities to ensure fairness, equal opportunities, and effective rehabilitation. It recommends improved access to diverse vocational training programmes, transparent labour allocation procedures, and policies that promote skill acquisition for all inmates regardless of gender. Keywords: Gender disparities, labour assignment, inmates, correctional facilities, rehabilitation, gender roles, Agodi Correctional Facility.
