Abstract

This study investigates field trips as a motivational strategy for enhancing secondary school students’ learning of History in Ilorin-South Local Government Area of Kwara State. The study was conducted to examine the impact of educational field trips on students’ interest, participation, and academic performance in History as a subject. Field trips provide practical learning experiences that enable students to connect classroom teachings with real-life situations, thereby improving understanding and retention of knowledge. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. Data were collected from selected secondary school students through the use of questionnaires and analyzed using appropriate statistical methods. The study examined the influence of field trips on students’ motivation, level of participation, and learning outcomes in History education. The findings of the study are expected to reveal that field trips significantly improve students’ interest and enhance effective learning by providing interactive and practical experiences outside the classroom environment. The study concludes that field trips are essential educational tools that contribute positively to students’ academic performance and understanding of historical concepts. Therefore, it recommends that schools and educational stakeholders should encourage and support the inclusion of field trips in History teaching and learning processes.
