CORPORATE GOVERNANCE AND BANK PERFORMANCE EVIDENCE FROM NIGERIA.
Abstract
This study investigated the role of corporate governance and Bank Performance: Evidence from Nigeria. The broad objective of the study was to examine the relationship between corporate governance and performance of deposit money banks in Nigeria. Specifically, the study analyzed how board size influences the return on equity of the deposit money banks, the impact of board composition on the return on equity of deposit money banks in Nigeria and the effect of audit committee independence on Nigeria's deposit money banks return on equity. Ex post facto research design was adopted for the study since the fact that the independent variables used for this study such as board size, board composition and audit committee has already occurred. The data sourced for the study were analysed using E-view statistical package. The result findings reveal that board size has a negative and significant impact on ROE. The study also revealed that board composition has a negative but significant impact on ROE. Thus, the study concluded that considering the grievous consequence of poor corporate governance on the confidence of the public, it has impacted negatively on bank performance. The study, therefore, recommended among others, for increased involvement of institutional investors as well as the need to improve the level of board independence as a way forward in improving the quality of corporate governance and performance of Nigerian deposit money banks.
