Abstract

ABSTRACT This research undertakes a discourse analysis of Isiaka Aliagan’s Oba Mama, employing a prominent discourse theory based on J.L. Searle’s (1969) speech act theory. The study aims to examine the use of various speech acts within the play, utilizing a thorough identifying method to extract a total of 55 speech acts for detailed analysis. The findings underscore the significance of different speech acts including expressive, commissive, directive, declarative, and assertive in shaping the interactive and communicative dynamics of the play. The analysis highlights how these speech acts contribute to character development, plot progression, and the conveyance of cultural values. Ultimately, the study emphasizes the vital role of speech acts in constructing meaning and fostering engagement within theatrical discourse.
