Abstract

ABSTRACT This study investigates the influence of effective classroom management on the academic performance of senior secondary school students in Biology in the Maiduguri Metropolis, Borno State. Classroom management, often neglected in educational reforms, plays a pivotal role in facilitating an environment conducive to learning and enhancing student performance. The study examines various factors such as the use of instructional materials, classroom motivation, teaching methods, and the role of rewards and punishments in influencing student outcomes. A total of 1,260 students across six schools participated, with performance data analyzed for three senior secondary classes: SS 2A, SS 2B, and SS 2C. The results indicate that 50.39 percent of students scored in the higher grade categories A and B, while a notable percentage faced challenges, with 16.04 percent of students either performing poorly E or failing F. The study highlights that, despite challenges such as overcrowded classrooms and limited resources, effective use of instructional materials and classroom motivation significantly contribute to improved academic outcomes. Additionally, teaching methods that align with effective classroom management practices are crucial in fostering student engagement and success. The findings underscore the importance of discipline, motivation, and well structured teaching approaches in enhancing the overall academic performance of students in Biology. The study suggests that further emphasis on effective classroom management strategies could mitigate academic challenges and improve educational outcomes in public secondary schools.
