ASSESSMENT OF CRITICAL PATH METHOD AS TOOLS FOR BUILDING PROJECT DELIVERY IN NIGERIA (A CASE STUDY OF IBADAN METROPOLIS)
Abstract
This research work assess critical path method as tools for building project delivery in Nigeria, with the view to investigate the challenges facing implementation of Critical Path Method on effective building project delivery in Ibadan metropolis, to determine the factors influencing Critical Path Method application on building project delivery in the study area and to assess the effect of Critical Path Method on building project delivery in the study area.
The study adopted a quantitative research method with the use of structured questionnaire that was administered on construction professionals to obtain relevant data. The construction professionals from whom data were collected include different professionals in the selected construction firms in Ibadan Metropolis. Forty five (45) questionnaires were administered and Forty (40) of them were retrieved. Thus, 88.89% response rate was achieved in the administration of the questionnaires. The collected data were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. The study revealed that the major challenges facing implementation of critical path method on building project delivery in Ibadan metropolis are Complexity of Projects with the mean score of 3.700 and ranked 1st then comes next Changes in project scope with the mean score of 3.625 followed by Task dependencies can hinder effective CPM implementation with the mean score of 3.600, Inaccurate Activity Duration Estimates with the mean score of 3.575, Limited Applicability with the mean score of 3.575, Complexity of large project with the mean score of 3.575, Communication Breakdowns with the mean score of 3.550, Changes in Project Scope with the mean score of 3.550 and Insufficient Resource Allocation with the mean score of 3.525.
Likewise, it was deuced that the factors influencing critical path method application on building project delivery in the study area and it was deduced that the major factors influencing critical path method application on building project delivery in the study area are that Project managers can optimize resource allocation with the mean score of 3.7250 then comes Potentially reduce overall project time, Providing a structured approach to project planning and scheduling, CPM helps identify the critical path, Critical tasks and minimize delays.
The study concluded that the effect of usage of critical path method on building project delivery in the study area are based on improved project scheduling, improved project schedule management, effect of planning on construction project, highlighting critical activities that directly impact the completion date, determining the minimum project duration, cost-effective project
completion, increased cost efficiency and better resource allocation, enhanced project control, provide improved project visibility and enhanced risk management.
