Abstract

This study assessed the immunization programme in Primary Health Centers (PHCs) in Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State. with the following objectives: examine mother level of awareness of immunization programme in primary health center of Igabi Government Area of Kaduna State. The study was undertaken in response to persistent challenges affecting routine immunization coverage despite government and partner interventions aimed at preventing vaccine-preventable diseases. The specific objectives of the study were to examine the level of awareness of immunization among parents/caregivers, assess the availability and accessibility of immunization services at PHCs, identify factors influencing immunization uptake, and examine challenges affecting the effective implementation of immunization programmes in the study area. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire administered to parents and caregivers attending selected Primary Health Centers in Igabi Local Government Area. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistical tools such as frequencies and percentages. Findings from the study revealed that most respondents were aware of the importance of immunization and acknowledged its role in preventing childhood diseases. However, despite the high level of awareness, full immunization coverage was not achieved due to several challenges. These included irregular vaccine supply, long waiting times at health facilities, inadequate health personnel, distance to health centers, and occasional negative attitudes of health workers. Socio-cultural beliefs and misinformation also played a role in limiting immunization uptake among some caregivers.
