Abstract

This study assesses the microbiological and physico-chemical characteristics of water samples from Ureje Dam, Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State, Nigeria. Water quality is a critical factor for public health, and understanding its parameters is essential for managing water resources. The research focuses on identifying potential contaminants and evaluating the water's suitability for consumption and other uses. Water samples were collected from three different points across Ureje Dam (Upstream, Midstream and Spillway) and analyzed for key physico-chemical parameters, including pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, and turbidity. Microbiological analysis was conducted to determine the presence of coliforms, E. coli, and other pathogenic microorganisms. Standard methods were employed for both the physico-chemical and microbiological assessments, ensuring accuracy and reliability of the data. Results indicated that certain physico-chemical parameters exceeded WHO permissible limits, suggesting potential health risks. The microbiological analysis revealed a significant presence of coliforms and E. coli, indicating possible fecal contamination. These findings underscore the need for regular monitoring and effective management strategies to ensure the safety of water from Ureje Dam. The study concludes that while the water is not entirely safe for direct consumption, with proper treatment, it can meet safety standards.
