Abstract

ABSTRACT This study was conducted to investigate the effects of cassava peel-based diets containing two levels each (10 and 20 %) of shivan and sandpaper leaf meals on the hematological parameters of West African Dwarf goats. Thirty (30) growing West African Dwarf goats weighing 5.00±0.08kg were used for the experiment. There were five experimental diets; namely; a cassava peel-based diet without shivan or sandpaper leaves (0GLM0FLM), and cassava peel-based diets containing two levels each of shivan and sandpaper leaf meals (10GLM, 20GLM, 10FLM, 20FLM). Six (6) animals, balanced for weight, were randomly assigned to each diet. Significant differences were observed for PCV, Hb value in (0GLM0FLM, 10GLM and 20FLM) diets while no significant differences in (20GLM and 10FLM) diet. Packed cell volume ranged from 20.00% to 36.00%, RBC ranged from 9.78 to 13.71(x106µL-1L), WBC ranged from 4.57 to 8.50(x106µL-1) and Haemoglobin ranged from 6.26 to 11.40(gdL1). All these values fall within the ranges for clinically health WAD goats. It can be concluded that the dietary treatments did not adversely affect the blood profile of the West African Dwarf goats.
