NATIONAL MINIMUM WAGE AND MEAN MINIMUM WAGE IN WEST AFRICAN STATES

Abstract

Nigerian workers persistently complain poor minimum relative to other West African Countries (Olarewaju,O.2022). In view, this study compared dollar exchange rate and minimum wage across the 15 west African countries through ascertain the amount of minimum wage for federal workers in each of the 15 countries in West Africa, determing the dollar exchange rate to local currency in each of the 15 countries in West Africa, comparing the amount of minimum wage for federal workers in the west Africa countries using the dollar unit, determing whether federal workers in Nigeria are poorly paid relative to West Africa counterparts. Results reveal that no countries in West Africa except Mauritania pays $130. Test of Z-Score of P>1.960 (1.0024) at 0.50 significant level established that there is significant difference between amount of minimum wage take to federal workers in Nigeria and the main minimum wage in west African countries. The study therefore recommend that the InternationalLabor Organization(ILO) should influence government in West African countries exceptMauritania to pay minimum wage of $130 for their workers or to sanction the countries.
