Abstract

This research project investigates the availability, adequacy, and impact of audio-visual (AV) resources on the academic achievement of Biology students in senior secondary schools within Bichi Local Government Area, Kano State, Nigeria. The study is motivated by the growing recognition of the role of technology in enhancing educational outcomes, particularly in science subjects like Biology, which often require the visualization of complex concepts. The research employs a descriptive survey design, collecting data from 28 Biology teachers across six secondary schools using structured questionnaires. The findings reveal significant disparities in the availability and adequacy of AV resources. While interactive whiteboards are widely accessible (78.6%) and deemed very adequate (50%), critical tools such as projectors (60.7% unavailable) and televisions/DVD players (78.6% unavailable) are scarce. Teachers overwhelmingly agree that AV resources enhance students' comprehension (92.8%) and retention (92.8%) of Biology concepts. However, challenges such as unreliable electricity (57.1%), lack of technical support (67.9%), and insufficient teacher training (60%) hinder the effective utilization of these resources. The study concludes that AV resources are essential for modernizing Biology education but require systemic improvements in infrastructure, training, and resource allocation to realize their full potential. Recommendations include raising awareness of the importance of AV tools, integrating AV training into teacher development programs, prioritizing equitable distribution of resources, strengthening infrastructure, embedding AV tools into the curriculum, and fostering partnerships with the private sector. The study underscores the need for collaborative efforts among governments, schools, and communities to address these challenges and improve educational outcomes in Bichi LGA and beyond.
