Abstract

Solid waste management has become a critical challenge in rapidly growing urban areas, especially in developing countries like Nigeria. This study investigates the practices, challenges, and awareness of solid waste management among traders in Monday Market and Gamboru Market, Maiduguri. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and daily waste monitoring over a one-month period in both markets. Results show that most traders generate between 5–10 kg of waste daily, with organic waste being the predominant type. The study also reveals inadequate disposal methods, limited access to proper collection facilities, and low awareness of effective waste management strategies. These findings underscore the urgent need for improved waste management policies, regular waste collection services, and public awareness campaigns to promote sustainable practices. The study provides valuable insights for local authorities and stakeholders seeking to enhance solid waste management in urban market. ‎
