Abstract

ABSTRACT Petroleum is one of the main energy sources which produces complex chemical combinations, mostly hydrocarbons. Despite its necessity, the careless positioning of gas stations near residential neighbourhoods endangers public health and safety. This study investigated the concentrations of heavy metals in groundwater samples near filling stations in different locations in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, Nigeria. The samples were analyzed for heavy metals (HMs) such as lead (Pb), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), chromium (Cr), cadmium (Cd), Cobalt (Co), Iron (Fe), Manganese (Mn) Vanadium (V) and nickel (Ni) using an Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS).The results showed that the concentration of Cr, Fe, Mn, and Pb exceeded the permissible limits set by the W.H.O. in groundwater. The concentration of heavy metals in the present studied samples ranges from 0.001-1.263 ppm.50% of the samples have random concentrations above the WHO set standards. This study suggests a need for groundwater resource management strategies and measures to protect human health from radiological and toxicological risks associated with groundwater consumption around the petrol stations in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State Nigeria.
