UNIVERSAL DESIGN PRINCIPLE APPLICATION IN ANGLICAN CHURCH: ENHANCING ACCESSIBILITY AND USABILITY FOR ALL
Abstract
ABSTRACT This study examines the design of Anglican church buildings with a focus on enhancing accessibility and usability for all categories of worshippers. The research was motivated by the growing concern that many church environments in Nigeria remain inaccessible to individuals with physical disabilities, the aged, and families with young children. Using a qualitative approach and case studies of selected churches, the study assessed how architectural design influences inclusivity, circulation, comfort, and overall user experience within worship spaces. The objectives of the study were to; design an Anglican church that ensures easy access and movement for individuals with physical disabilities; to improve the overall usability of the church for all users, including children, families, and visitors; to create a worship environment that supports the comfort and safety of elderly congregants. This study also employed a qualitative approach through case studies of four Anglican churches. Findings from this study revealed that many Anglican church buildings still struggle to meet the accessibility and usability needs of diverse worshippers, especially individuals with disabilities, the aged, and families with young children. Common barriers such as the absence of ramps, reliance on staircases, narrow aisles, and elevated platforms without accessible paths make entry and participation difficult. The study concludes with recommendations that Churches should incorporate ramps, wide doorways, and level flooring to improve accessibility for persons with disabilities and the aged. Adequate spatial planning should be ensured by providing wider aisles and flexible seating arrangements that allow free movement and participation.
