Abstract

Ants infestation have become sources of concern to the people in both urban and rural areas. The use of synthetic insecticides is belief to have quick action against this insects meanwhile, synthetic insecticides constitute environmental hazards. Therefore, nano-insecticides have been described as perfect alternative to this conventional chemicals. Silver nanoparticles were biosynthesized using O.gratissimum and A.indica and the products were used as nano-insecticides against a species of ants (Pachycondyla spp) at 4 concentrations (25%, 50%, 75% and 100%). Synthetic insecticides (Dichlovors) and control were included in the treatments for comparism. The treatments were arranged in a Complete Randomized Design with 3 replications. The percentage mortality separated using Ducan Multiple Range Test. The results clearly showed that nano O.gratissimum and A.indica exhibited insecticidal potential against the studied insect when compared with untreated ants. However, nano O.gratissimum killed higher percentage of ants ranging from 8.3- 56% than A.indica. Mode of application of the tested nano-insecticides determined the toxicity level of the nano-insecticides formulation. Also, the effectiveness of nano-insecticides was dose dependent. Therefore, green nanoparticles from O.gratissimum and A.indica can be used to control ants infestation.
