Abstract

ABSTRACT Soybean (Glycine max L. Merrill) is a vital legume crop known for its high protein content, oil yield, and ability to improve soil fertility through nitrogen fixation. With increasing global demand for sustainable agricultural practices, organic fertilizers have emerged as an environmentally friendly alternative to synthetic fertilizers. However, the response of different soybean varieties to organic fertilization varies significantly, affecting growth performance, yield output, and nutrient uptake efficiency. This study is therefore justified as it aims to bridge the existing knowledge gap by assessing the impact of organic fertilizer on the growth, yield, and nutrient uptake of five soybean varieties. The study was conducted at the LAUTECH Teaching and Research Farm, situated in Ogbomoso North Local Government Area of Oyo State, Nigeria. Five varieties of soybean namely TGX-24-28NG-0059 (V1), TGX-24-9NG-0023 (V2), TGX-1835-10E (V3), TGX-24-22NG-0046 (V4) and TGX-24-16NG-0035 (V5) and the treatments were poultry manure (T1), Mackpure (T2), Sheep and goat manure (T3) and Control (T4). Data were collected on growth, yield and nutrient uptake were analyzed by Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) (Genstat). Means obtained was separated by Least Significant Difference (LSD) at 5% probability level. Growth parameters (leaf area and leaf width), with V4 (TGX-24-22NG-0046) variety treated with poultry manure performed best. Number of leaves, with V4 (TGX-24-22NG-0046) variety treated with sheep and goat also performed best. Plant with no fertilizer application improved plant height of V2 (TGX-24-9NG-0023) variety. Number of flowers, dry weight and fresh weight of plant, with V4 (TGX-24-22NG-0046) variety treated with mackpure and sheep and goat performed best. V4 performed best generally and poultry manure performed best in terms of fertilizer. For optimum performance of soybean plant, V4 (TGX-24-22NG-0046) is recommended for cultivation in the study area and the use of poultry manure is highly recommended.
